Brothers, too often time and space erode the bonds of brotherhood. People move. Mail gets lost. We forget to call. Emails go unanswered. In an effort to connect us together a bit, this blog is a place to share personal news updates, post photos, ponder out loud, muse on theology, share encouragement, and post news on upcoming gatherings.

I remember eating b'fast with Will Trautman in the UU cafeteria and coming out of the double doors only to seen Dean Kim Thornbury crying while watching a tv in the Lex. A few people were gathered around the tv and we asked what was wrong. "They've hit the World Trade Center." I remember thinking how odd that a pilot could accidentally hit something that big on a day that clear. Perhaps the pilot had a heart attack or stroke, or it was an engine malfunction, I remember explaining to myself. Back in my room minutes later, I was watching tv only to see the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower. I remember Paul Whitt instantly called me and we said we must be under attack. A few minutes later, as I walked to class, I remember wondering if I should go to class - if class mattered anymore. I wondered if I would leave school in coming days, drafted by the military to fight and defend our nation. Later that day I remember talking with Paul and J-Mac about how this might be the beginning of World War III. I did not sleep well that night.

I remember rolling out of bed about 10 minutes before my first class that morning and seeing the image of a plane flying into a buildng as I walked out the door. Didn't really think anything of it at the time. Then when I got to the class of course everyone was talking about it and when our professor got in about 5 minutes late he just told everyone to go home. I remember my emotions jumping all over the place that day. Sadness, shock, rage, and a readiness to join the military and defend my country if needed. Glad it did not come to that.

Ever Since that day when I hear a big plane or jet flying low I wonder if it could be happening again.

I was student teaching at West Middle School. We were playing a game of Music Baseball, and I had to go to the Janitor's closet to get some supplies. There was a radio on in there, and I heard the DJ mention in passing that a plane had flown into the world trade center. He didn't make a big deal about it. I thought it was so strange that something like that would have happened, so I went back into the classroom to turn on the newstalk station. As we listened with about 30 middle school students, we heard when the next plane hit, and then the one that went down in Pennsylvania. I remember in the ensuing days reading CS Lewis' "Learning during war time," and "Why I am not a pacifist." I was gearing up to go to war. I also remember flag mania - a unified congress - stock market closed - and no football. Our country screeched to a halt for about a week. Memorable time indeed.
